It’s always heartbreaking when a dog is abandoned by their owner, especially when they’re found in such terrible shape. Thankfully, there are also kind people in the world willing to step up and give these poor pets a second chance.
That was the case recently, after one poor pit bull was abandoned severely underweight and unable to even stand. But now, Maggie is finally on the road to recovery.
On July 29, the Orange County Animal Shelter, in Virginia, took in an abandoned dog, a pit bull named Maggie. According to WVIR, a civilian found her, and she was severely underweight, weighing just 27 pounds, half of what would be considered healthy.
“Maggie was … almost lifeless, couldn’t move, couldn’t get up, couldn’t walk,” shelter director Gina Jenkins told WVIR.
She said the dog was suffering from demodectic mange and conjunctivitis, and was lethargic and dehydrated.
Jenkins says that while it’s an extreme case of animal abuse, she doubts that the owner will be found. Instead, they’re focusing on giving her the love and care she has been denied: “No one’s going to come forward. She’s going to be our baby.”
Maggie is now in good hands, and on the road to recovery, although given her condition it won’t be an easy one: it will reportedly take at least 3 to 4 months, and she might never fully get her hair back.
Still, everyone is determined to give this dog a much-needed second chance. Supporters online were moved by her story and have donated thousands of dollars for her care, meeting their fundraising goal in just 24 hours.
“Although she has a long road ahead, she is getting a little better each day,” the shelter reported on Facebook. “We will keep you all updated as she progresses.”
While she has a long way to go, Maggie’s spirits have been rising. After facing so much cruelty and neglect, she’s been settling in and making herself comfortable with food and blankets.
“She’s doing 100% better. It’s amazing what love and care and food will do for an animal,” Jenkins told WVIR. “She loves her blankets, and she loves to nestle in her blankets.”
It’s heartbreaking that Maggie was abandoned like this, but we’re so glad she’s finally in good hands and on the road to recovery!
