Hero ‘Guard Cat’ Saves The Day By Alerting Owner Of Armed Robbers

Many people get a pet dog to be their “guard dog,” protecting their home from unwanted intruders. But you don’t often hear about guard cats.

House cats are generally smaller and less intimidating than dogs, so they’re usually less effective at scaring away burglars. But recently, one pet cat saved the day by alerting his owner of a break-in.

Fred Everitt, a 68-year-old retiree from Belden, Mississippi, is the owner of a calico cat named Bandit. He adopted her from the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society four years ago.

But despite his criminal-sounding name, Bandit is on the right side of the law — and helped foil the plans of two burglars who tried to break in to their home.

According to the Northeast Mississippi Journal, the robbers broke in in the middle of the night, in the early hours of July 25. Fred was asleep — but thankfully, Bandit was keeping guard.

The cat reportedly meowed to wake her owner up, and then ran on top of his bed, clawing at him. Fred knew something serious was happening.

“She had never done that before,” Fred told the Journal. “I went, ‘What in the world is wrong with you?’”

Investigating, he found two young men: one armed with a handgun, and one trying to open the door with a crowbar. Fred went to get his own gun, but the would-be intruders fled the scene.

A very dangerous situation was averted, thanks to this heroic “guard cat.”

“It did not turn into a confrontational situation, thank goodness,” Fred said. “But I think it’s only because of the cat.”

“You hear of guard dogs. This is a guard cat.”

You’re a hero, Bandit! Cats aren’t usually known for being “guard” pets, but it’s clear this cat definitely saved the day!
